Shadows of Winterspell - A Book Review & A Teeny Little Poll

Hi readers!

It's been a while since I've done a book review, so here we are with one!

My book of choice is Shadows of Winterspell by Amy Wilson (as you very obviously read in the title of this post). I read this book quite a while ago and finally got around to making a book review for it.

I'm going to put out a new page soon dedicated to all of my book reviews so they're all in one place for people to read! If book reviews aren't exactly your thing, you can check out some of my more...*ahem* more random posts.

Another thing I wanted to mention (as you also read in the title) is that I have a new poll! Like I always mention whenever I put out a new poll- this doesn't require you to put in any of your personal information unless you are comfortable to. You can choose to remain completely anonymous if that's what you feel like doing. Here's the poll! Blog Poll!

A tiny disclaimer that anything I say in this review is completely my unbiased opinion, and its one hundred percent okay for anyone to disagree with anything I say. :)

Let's get into the book review! To know more about the author- Amy Wilson, you can visit her website here.

Shadows of Winterspell

Book Description: Stella has been living behind the magic of the forest for most of her life. Lonely, she enrolls at the local school, and as she begins to make friends, she discovers that she is even more different than she thought. But as autumn turns to magical winter, Stella realizes that uncovering her own family secret is the only way to release the forest from the grip of a dark and old magic.

In this book, a young magical girl named Stella lives with her Nan (who is a ghost) at the edge of a forest filled with deadly shadows caused by the Shadow King.

As you read on, you find out that the Shadow King himself was her Father, before the grief of losing his wife (her mother) overtook him and he became the Shadow King. One thing I found interesting was the fact that the Shadow King took the form of a stag, instead of a human being.

Anyway, Stella gets tired of staying in her magically protected home, hiding in solitude with her Nan and her pet imp for years. So she joins a school in hopes of making friends. Stella soon realises that there are other magical people in her school (like fae) and makes friends with one, her other friend being human.

This book is filled with friendships and morals, lined with adventure and magic, perfect for readers looking for a sweet, easy to read novel!

I think this book is pretty good for younger audiences, but not so much for experienced readers. I felt like the plot was a bit confusing, and not all that capturing enough. The ending felt slightly rushed and short when Stella defeated the Shadow King. After an entire book of waiting to journey into the forest, the final battle wasn’t as exciting as the climax suggested.

It’s hard to explain without a mountain of spoilers, but in general, this was a pretty solid read! I think the entire story was truly unique, especially the idea of having a ghost as your guardian.

I think in the end, this book is meant for younger audiences, but it's also great to read if you want a story filled with magic, adventure, and friendship (that sounded slightly cheesy but it's true!).

Thanks for reading this post! Make sure to check out the poll if you haven't already (Blog Poll!) and have a great day/night!

~ Sincerely, Saph
